Lee Sang Yeob is a popular South Korean director who directed series such as “Familiar Wife” and Shopping King Louie”. Moreover, co-writer Song Jae Jung is popular for his work “Memories of the Alahambra”, and Kim Yoon Joo wrote the critically acclaimed series “Find Me in Your Memory”. The series will also welcome newcomer screenwriter Kim Kyung Ran, who will work alongside them for the entire season.

What is the Plot of the Series?

Following the daily life of Yumi, the series tells about this 32-year old ordinary office worker. She is not good at expressing her feelings and that’s the main reason for her being single for so many years. The series follows her as she grows as a person and finds happiness through her romantic relationship and work. The cells in her body represent her varying emotions such as love, violence, rationality, good, and bad. The cells in her brain work actively for her as they try to deal with her emotions and troubles. Yumi likes her younger colleague Wook. However, a lot of things prevent her to pursue him. One of them being her insecurity for her age and the other reason is her love rival Ruby. Yumi is unwilling to take the risk even with her cells working to do anything for her happiness. Moreover, Wook approaches Yumi, wanting to talk to her and go out with her. This gives Yumi the impression that he is interested in her too. However, Wook sets her up on a blind date with his friend, Goo Woong. Also, Yumi learns that Wook is homosexual, ruining every chance of her being together with him. This upsets Yumi and she unintentionally ruins her blind date with Woong. In the middle of the date, she faints due to excessive stress and Woong carries her to a nearby hospital. They eventually get together. However, after Yumi expresses her thoughts of marrying him, Woong denies the idea since his game studio is unstable. Since he is unsure that he can keep her happy and economically stable, he never gave marriage any thought. The series continues with Yumi’s romantic struggles as her cells work hard to make the right decision for her happiness.

Character Description

Yumi Kim: She is an introverted foodie who is in her early thirties. She initially likes Wook, but he turns down any chance of being together with her due to his homosexuality. Yumi eventually starts dating Wook’s friend Woong, whom he set her up with for a blind date. Wook: He is Yumi’s colleague and is younger than her. Unaware of his homosexuality, Wook has many admirers in the company, including Yumi and Ruby. He works in the advertising department. After Yumi and Woong get together, Wook helps the couple and stops Sia from breaking them up. Ruby: She is Yumi’s former love rival and did whatever she could to be with Wook. However, all her efforts are wasted after she learns that Wook is gay. Ruby is manipulative in a way and has excellent flirting skills. Even though Yumi and Ruby had their differences, in the beginning, the duo eventually ends up being close friends. Ruby had a hard time getting over her unrequited love for Wook. Goo Woong: He is Wook’s best friend and is a gaming nerd. However, his nerdy and geeky tendencies simmered down after starts dating Yumi. Still, his love for video games compelled him to start a gaming studio of his own. Sia Seo: She is Woong’s co-worker and has a huge crush on him. However, Sia is extremely possessive of Woong and tried to use many underhanded ways to stop him from being together with Yumi.

Yumi’s Cells K-Drama Release Date

The K-drama of Yumi’s Cells will follow the basic story of the webtoon. The series began filming in the first half of 2021. The filming will at least finish after June 2021. Considering the time it will take for editing, promotions, and other pre-release activities, Yumi’s Cells will release in autumn 2021. The production firm of the drama, Studio Dragon confirmed that the series will premiere in 2021.  So, even though there is no official announcement for the release date of the series, we can safely say that it will definitely air before December 2021 ends.
